Pea and Ham Soup
1 bag green or yellow split peas
1 kilo bacon bones (not hocks – too salty)
4 potatoes, peeled and chopped
1 onion, peeled and chopped
1 Tbsp crushed garlic
4 carrots, peeled and chopped
250g diced bacon
Sweat off potatoes, onions, garlic and carrots in a hot pan for 5 mins, adding a 1/4 cup of water to stream with lid on. Cook diced bacon until just browned.
Put into slow cooker.
Add bacon bones and washed split peas.
Cover with water, cook for 5-7 hours, remove bones from the pan, strip of meat and add meat back to soup.
Check for seasonings.
